Which Foil Printing Method Is Right for Your Job?

Hot Foil Stamping

Hot foil stamping uses heat and pressure to apply metallic or coloured foil to the surface of the paper or card. A custom magnesium block is produced from your artwork, heated and pressed through the foil onto the selected stock.

The process creates a traditional premium finish with strong metallic reflection. It is suitable for logos, names, borders, patterns and feature text on business cards, wedding stationery, presentation folders, packaging, certificates and other specialty printing.

• Foil colours: Gold, silver, rose gold, copper, holographic and other colours are available, depending on the foil and stock.
• Artwork: Foil areas should generally be supplied as clean vector artwork. Photographs, gradients and low-resolution images are not suitable for the foil plate.
• Paper stocks: Hot foil can be applied to many coated, uncoated, coloured, textured and premium stocks, subject to testing and the requirements of the job.
• Additional finishes: Foil can be combined with digital or offset printing, embossing, debossing, letterpress, die cutting, white ink and celloglaze.

Other metallic/foil print options

Digital Metallic Inks

Digital metallic printing uses metallic dry toner or ink printed directly onto suitable paper or card. It does not require the custom block used for traditional hot foil stamping.

The result is a flatter metallic print rather than a stamped or raised foil impression. It can be a practical option when you need shorter runs, samples, personalised details or variable data.

• Metallic colours: Gold, silver and other metallic colours may be available, depending on the printing process.
• Short runs: Lower setup requirements can make metallic printing suitable for smaller quantities.
• Variable data: Names, numbers and other details can change between copies where the selected process supports variable printing.

Digital Foiling and Sleeking

Digital foiling, also known as sleeking, fuses metallic foil to digitally printed toner using heat and pressure. Unlike traditional hot foil stamping, it does not require a custom metal block.

The artwork is initially printed using toner, and the foil bonds to the designated printed areas as the sheet passes through the foiling equipment. This can reduce setup requirements and make the process practical for shorter runs, samples and personalised printing.

• Foil colours: Gold, silver and other metallic colours may be available, depending on the selected foil and production process.
• Shorter runs: Lower setup requirements can make digital foiling more practical for small quantities than traditional hot foil stamping.

• Hot foil stocks: Hot foil stamping can work across many coated, uncoated, coloured, textured and premium papers, subject to the detail in the artwork and the suitability of the stock.
• Digital foil stocks: Digital foil and sleeking generally work best on smooth stocks with a matt or soft-touch celloglaze that supports reliable foil adhesion.
