Foiling and metallic inks are a great way to add a premium and luxurious feel to your printing. There are a range of print methods and techniques to choose from to add a touch of shimmer, depending on your budget, deadline, and requirements.
Hot foil press uses traditional metallic foil which is applied to the surface material using heat and pressure. It involves creating a magnesium block with your chosen design etched in, the foil is placed between the block and surface and then stamped into the stock one at a time.
It’s an elegant way to add class and style to your printing and is available in metallic gold, silver, rose gold, copper and even holographic, as well as a range of other colours. Due to setup time and costs, minimum order quantity is 50 and no variable data available.
Hot stamp foiling works great on its own or you can keep it small and team it up with digital, offset print, white ink or letterpress. The beauty of foiling is that it’s so versatile and can be used on a range of stock options, creating a premium effect.
Hot Stamp foiling options and benefits
Digital foiling uses a metallic dry toner directly onto paper or cardstock without having to create custom blocks/plates. We use a digital gold silver and a range of metallic colours which have a much quicker turnaround in compared to hot stamp foiling. This also allows us to print variable data, accommodate short runs, and even print samples which are not available options with hot foil pressing.
Digital foiling creates beautiful results but please keep in mind it’s not going to be the same as a hot foil. For one it will be directly printed onto the card rather than stamping it in creating a deep impression. Please ask our friendly sales team for samples to see the difference between the two.

Digital foil or sleeking is a process of fusing metallic foil sheets to digital toner ink. Your design is printed with black toner, then the sheet is fed through a digital foiling machine which uses a heat roller similar to a laminator. This process makes it perfect for short run jobs and foiling variable data. Typically, this form of digital foil works best on stock with a matte cello glaze to help with adhesion. So, keep in mind this option is not available on uncoated or textured stocks. Turnaround for digital foiling is currently 6-10 business days.

Scodix or raised UV is a 3D effect similar to digital foiling. With a specialty scodix machine it uses UV-cured polymer ink that can lay down a very thick coating, up to 250 microns per pass giving it a raised effect. With two colours available, gold or silver it’s applied to a 450gsm artboard with velvet laminate.
